Tennessee Work Trip, Saturday, October 13, 2007
Section 17 a, 17 b Sycamore Creek Trail (Tellico River Rd. to FS61B)
8:30 a.m.: Meet at Hardees in Tellico Plains for breakfast; 9:00 a.m.: Meet at Cherohala Visitor’s Center back parking lot; or 9:30 a.m.: Meet at Pheasant Field Picnic area (just beyond the Tellico Trout Hatchery)
Tools needed are: 1 chain saw, weed-eaters, manysling blades & loppers.
Please confirm with hike leaders if you plan to go and what tools you will need: Pam or Kent Mathews, pmath0804@yahoo.com, or 865-567-0657.
Come join us on one of the most historic and beautiful sections of the Benton MacKaye. The grade is easy to moderate for a total of 5.5 miles. The low point is 2100 feet and the high point is 4,250 feet. Tentative plans are for Pam to shuttle one person with a chain saw and at least 2 people with weed-eaters to the top of the trail. Kent and the rest of the crew will begin at the trailhead at the Pheasant Field Picnic area. We will meet in the middle and hike back to the Pheasant Field Picnic area together. We are planning to stop by Tellicafe or Town Square Restaurant for a meal afterwards. If you prefer to camp on the trail, from the Tellico River Road side there is an area for camping beside the creek at approximately the 1 mile marker and again at the 4.5 mile marker. There is parking available at both ends of the trail.
Note: Camping and other accommodations will be at a premium this week-end as Coker Creek hosts The Autumn Gold Festival. 2 primitive camp sites are available close to the Pheasant Fields picnic area. Birch Branch has 5 campsites and is located ½ mile east of this picnic area. Davis Branch has 4 campsites and is located 1 mile east. These campsites are available on a first come, first served basis. They must be occupied the first night and camping equipment cannot be left unattended for more than 24 hours. Both campsites are located beside the Tellico River with no running water, but offer pit toilets and fire rings. There are also pit toilets available at the Pheasant Field Picnic Area.
