Dear BMTA Members and friends,
The latest Edition of the Benton MacKaye Trail Association Newsletter can be found at January
2012 Newsletter. It really looks great - many thanks to Editor Gene Nix for the terrific job.
Upcoming Activities
Jan 28th - Rick Harris has organized a "Saw-A-Thon" in the Tennessee area to take advantage
of the great weather and lack of snow. Sycamore Creek, John Muir Trail, Big Frog Wilderness
and other areas. Rick has teams going to several areas, so if you can make a Sunday Work Trip,
contact Rick Harris at HarrisRi@aol.com or call 423-253-6358 home or 513-260-1184.
Remember-this is THIS Sunday, the 28th.
Feb 11 - Georgia Work Trip. Details pending weather, but contact Tom Keene at
"tkbmta@gmail.com" if you are interested. He will get back to you with details.
Feb 24 - Federal Land Managers Meeting. Headquarters Cabin in Blue Ridge, GA. Annually, we
meet with our Forest Service Partners to discuss Trail-Wide issues. This year, we are meeting
at the Cabin on the Sisson Sales Office on Route 515 in Blue Ridge, and having an open lunch.
We are hoping for good weather, but we have inclement weather plans, "just in case." Come by
the Cabin about 11:30 AM for lunch and stay for the meeting.
If you have questions, contact Dick Evans at "President@bmta.org" or call 828-479-2503. We need
a couple of folks to volunteer to help with the meal serving.
Feb 25 - Rick Harris has a Tennessee/N. Carolina Work Trip scheduled, again pending weather.
contact Rick Harris at HarrisRi@aol.com or call 423-253-6358 home or 513-260-1184.
March 10 - Training for Maintaining Session. Ocoee Whitewater Center. All current or potential trail
maintainers should make plans to be there. More info in the Newsletter, but reserve your space
by emailing "President@bmta.org" and let me know if you need First Aid Classes or not. We will
only have a limited number in that session.
March 17 - Not strictly a BMTA activity, but all members have been invited to join Ken Jones and
Phyllis Loman as they wed at Vogel State Park at 2 PM.
March 31 - Annual Walk-thru. We need folks to volunteer to hike a section of the BMT and report its
conditions so that maintenance trips can be planned. Full details are at Walk Thru We plan on
trying to get together at a couple of locations after the hike to compare notes, so watch the website
for details and we will email plans as we get closer.
So, take advantage of the weather and get out some.
See you on the Trail,
Dick Evans
President
