Chainsaw and Crosscut certification/recertification

BMTA Members,
We have been notified by David Kuykendall about possible chainsaw and crosscut saw certification
classes for the Blue Ridge district. These classes are a great way to meet other volunteers and some
of our Forest Service partners.
Chainsaw certification/recertification
Anyone using a chainsaw on national forest land needs to be certified. If there is sufficient demand, a
course might be offered this summer. Otherwise, a course will probably be offered in the September-
October time frame. I already have five members who would like to take the course this summer. If we
can get more, it would be even better. We need to have more volunteers for chainsaw work, so this will
be a good opportunity. Contact me to let me know if you are interested, if you have not already done
so. I need to know whether you need an initial certification or a recert. For initial certification, the course
is two days. For recert. It is one day. I do not have the dates for this course but it will be on a Sat.-
Sun. schedule.
Crosscut Certification/Recertification
Chainsaws cannot be used in wilderness areas. Crosscut saws must be used to clear blowdowns in
forest areas designated as wilderness. Persons using crosscut saws must be certified by an instructor
approved by and under the direction of the Forest Service. Mr. Kuykendall is proposing a class for the
weekend Sept 24-25. We need more volunteers with this certification. Let me know if you are interested.
Mr. Kuykendall has informed me that he needs to know ASAP who is interested, as the Forest Service’s
schedule and commitments for the upcoming months are filling up fast.
If you are interested, contact me at rshatl@etcmail.com or Ph: 706-636-3499.
