BMTA members,
As you know from the newsletter, we have been partnering with Save Georgia뭩 Hemlocks (SGH)
www.savegeorgiashemlocks.org/Hemlock_Camp_Meeting.htm in spreading the word about the serious
threat to Hemlock forests in the mountains. They have been giving us a lot of assistance sponsoring
clinics which inform landowners how to treat the Hemlock trees against infestation from the Hemlock
Woolly Adelgid insect. Donna Shearer of SGH asked us to participate in an event they are sponsoring for
the first time this year, but is planned to be an annual event. On, October 30th, THE HEMLOCK CAMP
MEETING will be held at Anderson Creek Retreat near Roy Road off GA 52 about 8 miles east of Ellijay.
Go to www.andersoncreekretreat.com for information about this development. The retreat is a 1500
acre environmentally planned development with a large amount of green space containing miles of trails.
The purpose of this event is to bring folks together who are interested in protecting the natural outdoor
environment in general with an emphasis on preserving the Hemlocks. Numerous outdoor and
conservation groups are being invited. This will be a great opportunity to network with a number of
interesting folks and should be a fun outing in beautiful fall weather. Description of the event can be
seen in the above attachment.
Our own Walter Cook will be leading a 1-hour hike starting at 10 a.m. Our other contributions are to supply
a few volunteers to help out with the event and to assist manning the BMTA information booth we will be
setting up at the meeting location. Otherwise, just bring a covered dish and come and enjoy the beautiful
setting at the park along Anderson Creek. SGH will supply barbeque and bluegrass music. Children are
welcome. There is no charge for this event, but an RSVP is requested. To make a reservation, please
email donna@savegeorgiashemlocks.org or call the Hemlock Help Line 706-429-8010. In addition, if you
would like to volunteer to help, call or email me. I will be coordinating any BMTA volunteer assistance
with SGH.
We would like to see a good showing of our membership in support of this worthy cause. Look forward to
hearing from you.
