GEORGIA BMTA AUGUST & SEPTEMBER
MAINTENANCE TRIPS
*** Saturday, August 14 ***
This is our special annual join venture with the Conasauga District horse people on the Benton MacKaye
Trail from Spanish Oak Gap in the Cohutta Wilderness to the Tennessee state line at Double Springs
Gap. The horse people go in the longer distance to maintain, and we take a shorter jaunt to slingblade
and lop closer to the parking lot at Dally Gap. It’s a great and fun time together. Soft drinks and
watermelon will be provided at the end in early afternoon.
Important time change: We will meet at 7:45 a.m. and leave at 8:15 at the Village Restaurant in Blue Ridge
(a quick buffet breakfast). We need to be at the gap by 9:00 a.m. Larry Thomas of the U.S. Forest
Service will be overall coordinator of this event, but I will be assisting him for the BMTA contingent.
Please feel free to contact me at 706-374-4716 or gowen2@tds.net for further information or questions.
This would be an especially good trip for the many recent newcomers to the BMTA.
*** Saturday, September 11 ***
Our September trip is to Halloway Gap where we will improve the sidehill on both sides of the gap and
make other improvements to the area and the campsite in the gap. We will drive to at least the top of Flat
Top Mountain and maybe further if we can work it out with the Forest Service.
Meet at the usual time of 8:00 a.m. at the Village Restaurant in Blue Ridge, leaving there at about 8:35,
or at Watson Gap at 8:50.
This too would be an excellent trip for our recent association newcomers – a chance to learn about
sidehilling.
GA maintenance director George Owen is leading this trip too. Contact him for information.
