URGENT REMINDER: May Cumberland Gap Trip

To the members of the Mountain High Hikers (MHH) and BMTA (Joint Trip):

Again I am sending you below the initial invitation to the early May trip to Cumberland Gap NationalHistorical Park/Pine Mountain Resort State Park. If you plan to go, and you can go for any of the
days of that first full week in May, it is urgent that you register NOW. Be sure to indicate you are
registering as part of the SEFTC (see below) to get the special rate. Already, as of today, May 6,
all rooms at the state park lodge are filled for May 5-6. However, a few cottages and cabins
are still available. Read the information below in the original letter and make your reservations at
800-325-1712 PRONTO! Remember to let Sue Sorice know when you have made your reservation,
including your arrival and departure dates (954-644-9638).

Joint May Trip to Cumberland Gap with George & Sue

(The following trip has been cleared with the presidents/hike coordinators of BMTA & MHH)

This is a wonderful chance to go with Sue Sorice and me (George Owen) to Cumberland Gap
National Historical Park and nearby Pine Mountain State Park to hike the scenic trails, maybe
tour a cave or two, attend the Southeastern Foot Trails Coalition (SEFTC) Conference (options
of hikes, workshops, evening entertainment). This is north of Knoxville where TN, KY, and VA
come together.

This event is being offered jointly to the Mountain High Hikers and the Benton MacKaye Trail
Association. Both clubs are SEFTC members, with representatives.

Our trip is offered from Tuesday, May 5 (first hike I lead is at 1:00 p.m.) until Sunday, May 10.
The SEFTC portion is May 7-10 (Thurs. eve until Sunday). You may come for all or part of this
six days. (Some MHH folks have indicated a wish to leave Sat. to be with family for Mother’s Day,
May 10. This was the only weekend the SEFTC could secure the facilities.)

The host facility is nearby Pine Mountain State Resort Park, with both a lodge and cottages.
Attendees for this event can secure rooms at the state park thus, with a significant SEFTC discount
at the lodge: Herndon J. Evans Lodge – room $59.95 nightly, one-bedroom cottage $95 per night,
two-bedroom cabin (two double beds each room) $125 nightly. Tax of a few dollars is added to
each of these. URGENT: Only a few rooms in the lodge are left – make reservations now!!!

You need also this week, to secure a room at group rate, to pay the $20 registration for the SEFTC
Conference – the same amount as just one night inn discount and the only way you are eligible
to get in the facility. (The lodge has a restaurant for your meals.)

The Cumberland Gap National Historical Park only has a campground. Should you desire to camp,
make reservations at 606-248-2817. (Continue on next page)

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Go to the SEFTC website, www.southeastfoottrails.org/Conference - pay the $20 fee.

2. Continue on the website and select proper button for lodging reservation & make your
reservation with payment for nights you plan to stay – lodge or cabin. You may also phone
the state park lodge directly for room, cottage or cabin at 1-800-325-1712. IMPORTANT: When
registering for lodging, tell the staff this is under Group ID 7374, Password number is 984051384.

3. Let Sue Sorice know that you have registered with both the conference and lodging at her
number, 954-644-9638. That way we can properly plan hikes, and she will be checking periodically
with the state park to cross-verify your registration for you. (Please identify for her that you are
BMTA if not MHH.)

NOTE: Registration is urgent – early this week. If you are unable to get in the state park, we will
help you fine rooms then in nearby Middlesboro, KY (Holiday Inn Express, etc.).

Some couples or individuals may want to explore together renting a state park cottage, especially
the two-room ones with four beds. Cottages have kitchens.

Suggest you explore more about this conference and its workshops, events, etc., on the website.
Also hit the connections to the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park (70 miles of trails) and the
Pine Mountain Resort State Park (15 miles of trails).

I talked today to the coordinator of this SEFTC event, and the hikes for that weekend are now
being completed in the planning and will be announced in a few days. We will do our own hikes
Tuesday afternoon (May 5) through Thursday afternoon (May 7).

Should you have questions, please feel free to contact me. I will also be sending out some
information updates as needed when questions arise that all may need info on.
