A few more folks would be nice to round out the TN worktrip set for this weekend. For
those who wish to come up to work perhaps the most remote section on the eastern
seaboard, give Eric Eades a call (706)-313-0873.
The plan is to brush out 16b, which runs from Round Top to Sledrunner Gap, and if
enough show, perhaps to lop out some thick areas of rhododendron going down
Brookshire Creek. The staging area is Beaverdam Bald; to get there:
First get to Tellico Plains. Off TN 68, take the turn onto the Cherohala Parkway, towards
Robbinsville, NC (east). Go approximately 6 miles out of town, and make a right onto
the well marked Hatchery Road (ranger station, Ect). You will travel about 17 miles,
going past Bald River Falls, and several FS campgrounds. You will go thru the charming
hamlet of Green Cove. The final campground you will pass is "Holder Campground";
proceed .4 mile and turn right onto Beaverdam Bald Road, just before a bridge crossing
the Tellico River, and another campground.
It's just about 5.5 miles long, and half isn't bad. But that's where the 4 wheel drive is a
must! At about mile 3, you come to a 3 way; bear all the way right. There are about 3
or 4 turnouts; keep going straight. At about mile 5.5, the road enters a wildlife clearing,
which is where we'll bivy.
If you happen to arrive late, the ugly, black truck will have some tools in back. Loppers
or a hand saw will do you well. To access the BMT, go to the far back, right of the
clearing. Proceed into the woods, past a tank trap, and look for a lightly cleard path
downslope. Follow it down, about 1/8 mile, to where it opens into Sledrunner Gap.
Go straight, and it will take you south to where the major work group will be. Turn right,
and you'll head down Brookshire Creek, in need of lopping and light handsaw work.
It's all handwork down there. Sledrunner south is machinery approved. Saturday 3-4
PM, we hope to reconvene at the bivy point.
re: camping on Beaverdam. It's dry, so recommend you bring your own water.
Hope you can come! RSVP recommended.
Thanks, Eric Eades
