The BMTA Board has appointed me BMTA Hiking Director with the mission
of promoting and organizing hiking activity in BMTA. We are in the process
of scheduling a series of day hikes and backpacks for 2008.

To get things started, we have been invited to jointly participate in a hike
on the BMT already planned by the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club for next
Saturday. There are currently five slots available (within the maximum of 12
in Wilderness Areas). If you want to join us, please contact Dawn Collinge,

Bushy Head Gap to Dyer Gap Dayhike
Section 8 of the BMT Trail
Rated: A2B [distance - 9-13 miles, pace - fast (2 - 2.5 mph), terrain -
strenuous]

This is the longest section (12.8 miles) on the Benton MacKaye Trail (BMT).
From Bushy Head Gap, we will climb a series of knobs on Bear Den
Mountain, then down to Hudson Gap, up for a while, down to McKenny Gap,
and so forth from knob to gap until we crest Flat Top Mountain and make
the final descent down to Dyer Gap. Without a doubt, this is our second
favorite hike in Georgia (the first being Coosa!). Be prepared for a
challenging day of moderate to strenuous hiking.
